One afternoon, a lady called me in the house and said that she's from Cocoplans, informing me that I have won in their Handog Pasasalamat raffle held last December. I never joined any raffle or whatever with the company. I was told that somebody might have placed my name and that 50 winners were picked from Davao to avail of their fully-paid life or accident plan, or whatever that was. The lady said the cost of the accident insurance which will cover until I reach 65 years old is between 20 thousand pesos (P20,000.00) to 1 million pesos (P1,000,000.00).
Upon claiming I should have brought with me the following: A government ID, in this case SSS or Philhealth may suffice; a company ID, and the third was a credit card or bank loan statements to ensure that proper investigation of my character has been made.
Mmmmm. fishy! So I said, I don't own a credit card because I am afraid to incur a lot of loans. And I added that my payroll is enlisted with UCPB, can't they check there themselves? And she said no. It's different. How different, I can't tell for sure. And so the lady from Cocoplans said that I bring with me a friend who got a credit card. Ngek! I said to myself why must I bother a friend over my winning when I wasn't even sure what they were up to.
Mmmm. And then I said, why must the card be necessary, is my friend not enough or a job certification from my current employer would not be enough to ensure of my identity.
Because, I won right? Why should I need a credit card to prove my identity?
So I went to the office this morning just to check for myself after buying my medicines. I got flu and well, it might be interesting to know what they are cooking up.
My soul is not at peace as to the necessity of the credit card blah, blah...
And the lady in the office, I surmise was tasked to explain the whole thing.. And she said the same that a card was necessary. I need not show the number or whatever. And so I asked, was the promo registered at DTI? She said no. Mmmmmm, again,
So I picked up the phone and called the manila office, the lady who answered said that the might consider giving me the prize without having to show my credit card. Ayun naman pala eh. After a seeming kilometric presentation of my doubts and arguments, some of which were "Why can't people from Cocoplans do the investigations themselves?" Or "unless Cocoplans intend to sell a policy to me outright, to which i am not interested." And the lady said that I won't be forced to buy policies, even if I won't the prize will still be given to me. Aha! so they truly intend to ask me to buy a plan from them. Yikes!
Some threads in internet forums mentioned nasty things about this "Handog Pasasalamat Promo".
Well, since they told me I won and I've done my part I will just wait on them to do the effort of giving me my prize. That is, if they really intend to.
Just After 15 minutes of calling Manila, the Davao office called up and told me to claim my prize without having to bring the ridiculous credit card blah blah...
Again, pwede naman pala.
What else can I say but Thank You.
Still I have yet to figure everything out. I hope there will be no strings attached, whatsoever.
 | all is well that ends well. how awesome is that? yay! |
 | Still sounds like a scam to me. Be careful. |
 | Yes Lyn, I am just trying to get to the bottom of all these. Thanks for the warning. I smell something fishy in all these unsolicited winning stakes...mmm |
 | hahahaha! it's not exactly a scam 'cause i did get my insurance plan (20K lang - bunot2x style). pfffft.. better to get the 20K plan than nothing i guess. although it WAS a hassle. i had to stay for about an hour at the cocoplans office for "processing." i'm not sure but for some reason i felt that was a scheme for their salespeople to have more time to do their thing. haha! |
 | ""I never joined any raffle or whatever with the company. I was told that somebody might have placed my name""
~~ kahit ako rin nman...magiging suspicious dito.. |
 | oh well, when they told me that I won, they better be true with their words. Kath, thanks, I also feel that they are going to give me the promised reward but I also forewarned them that I don't want anyone selling me stuff because that is not the way it should be. |
 | the rep who handled my insurance reward kept reiterating that they weren't trying to sell anything but his actions spoke otherwise. hehe. he wasn't literally hawking other insurance plans or what not but he kept talking about how coco plans is one of the safest and longest-standing insurance companies in the phils. that in itself is sales talk enough for me -- albeit, discreetly. haha!
oh and another annoying thing is, you'll have to constantly renew your "insurance reward" every year, otherwise it will become null and void. HAH! bet they're hoping more than half of the thousand or so people with insurance rewards will forget to renew (naturally). LOL. ahhh tis always the season for business business business. =D |
 | exactly Kath. haven't visited there yet....pero baka later. well, they are not going to sell me something...pagagalitan ko sila. |
 | nice conversation you got there guys..i would understand the doubts that runs in your mind. allow me to put some clarification to some details of this "handog pasasalamat of Cocoplans"....1. it is registered with DTI permit number 3372, series of 2009. recipients of the personal accident insurance and participants for which are randomly selected from our database (mostly from referral program). 2. as recipients, you are under NO OBLIGATION to buy or purchase anything from us. 3. we ask for legitimate, active identification cards...and we accept credit card as one though not a requirement. for as long as the recipient is 21 to 64 years old, they may claim their accident insurance certificate and a raffle coupon which will entitle them to win an entertainment showcase and a kitchen showcase on the grand raffle draw. 4. as a recipient, you didn't actually won..but you are entitled to receive the said certificate and raffle coupon. anything free is of premium, right maam? we are not to take the risk of putting the name of the company in bad light for such a campaign. if some company can afford to pay the television company for advertisement without any guarantee that viewers would buy from them, why not use the cost for tv advertisement for such a campaign and give it directly to the consumer? after all, it is the consumer that we owe a lot... |
 | again, you wont be under no obligation to buy or purchase anything. we are to do best to assist you. though i must say, we would take the chance of showing you what the company is all about as you visit our office. after all, you would at least wish to know whom you are dealing with and what kind of company would give you something for free. di ba maam/sir? |
 | i am glenn javier de castro...senior business development manager for cocoplans - south mindanao operation. you may look for me when you visit the office. i appreciate your concern and comments... |
 | pardon me...what i mean is...YOU WILL BE UNDER NO OBLIGATION TO BUY OR PAY FOR ANYTHING to claim your accident certificate and raffle coupon. pardon my grammar..thanks a lot. |

No, your staff in Davao specifically demanded that I brought with me my credit card or bring a friend with one. Not until I called Manila did they concede. |
 | Still sound shady to me. Hope this is resolved for you soon. |
 | wewgrey wrote on Sep 1, '09, edited on Sep 1, '09 I received a text message this morning Sept. 1, 2009 at 11:46 AM, the message was like this....
Greetings! This is Maricel Alvarez of Cocoplans, Inc. The message came from +639229492872
When i got the message, i called the Cocoplans, Inc. to ask about the message I got. I look for Maricel Alvarez but she was busy talking to other claimants (I guess), so I spoke with this girl named, Dally Florendo, also from Cocoplans who answered my call.
She (Dally) told me to claim my certificate, I must present 3 valid identification, 1 is company ID, second is any government ID and the third one is credit card... Huh! A credit card? Yes I have one, but what does the credit card has something to do with the certificate that I will claim? She says, coz when applying for a credit card, it has been investigated, so this means I am entitled to claim the certificate. She assures me that i will not pay anything, only efforts to go to their office in Makati, located at 18F Rufino Pacific Tower, Corner VA Rufino St. Ayala Makati. She even told me, if there will be a payment, she'll pay for it just to assure me I am not paying for anything. (Coz I really didnt want another responsibilities in paying, also I dont want my name to be listed on BANKS hot lists as NOT a good payer. In short, ayoko masira and name ko... just because of this.) After talking to Dally, I googled the said Cocoplans offer to make sure this is not a scam. I read many of the reviews about it, now I am thinking if should I go or not to claim my certification OR should I go and leave my credit card to make sure they can't swipe it, as they said, they only needed those IDs to look at the signatures of those IDs that they need (includes company ID, government ID and the credit card)...
I even asked, where they get my number??? they said, some of my friends referred me to them, which I doubt is not. I dont even joined any raffles.
What I can say about this is... If we are entitled for those DATAMEX, PERSONAL ACCIDENT INSURANCE, etc. why in need of credit cards if the prizes are really for us??? I still see this as a scam, if not, then DONT ASK FOR OUR CREDIT CARDS!!! |
 | Exactly Wewgrey. I claimed mine just to know the whole process. That lady on the phone told me it was placed on a sealed envelop that is why she didn't know if it was 20 thousand or 1 million pesos worth....but when I got there, Lo and behold! this man, who got a piece of ready-made certificate, made out of thin carton material, tore a side of that certificate, asked me to sign, and voila, goes my winning moment....on that piece of ready-to fill in certificate. I told you, I thanked UCPB for the freebie...but to be imposed on the credit card requirement was the trigger of it all. And to top it all, a few weeks back, another lady called up to tell me to claim the same prize from UCPB....Waaaaaaaaaaaah! |
 | Hi! Is this really legitimate? So i can claim even without showing my credit card? My dad just got a text from them, scholarship certificate grant and healthway medical card naman yung prize. They are really insistent on showing my credit card. Nice sana yung price pero scary e... Ang dami pa naman nang scam. |
 | When I got mine, I called manila office to tell them that I don't have a credit card and I don't want to tag a friend just for this, most especially that my friend had to show a credit card of his own. What for? When I could have just shown them my SSS ID, employment ID and the like...stupid really. But they yielded. When you get to their office, they will give you a piece of card paper where you will write some details and voila! they will tear it off and give you that piece as a certificate. Quite different from what the woman on the phone described it to be. Just get it. As to the legitimacy, I am not certain, when I asked them about DTI registration, the guy was pissed off. This is just a marketing ploy to get another potential clients for their other plan package etc. |
 | got a call like this yesterday and since I did not have a CC, they said I could bring a relative who has one. Duh! How would that work as a check of my character if I did not own the card. I told them no, ang kulit parin, sabi punta ako today 1 pm, sabi ko I have work, they said I should just absent kasi sayang. No way I'm going there. |
 | i got a call from UCPB group today, she said I just bring an ID, and drop by at their office at 5th floor Rufino plaza bldg, to claim AMA scholarship and healthway card. I want to ask if they will give me this prize upon arriving there... |
